At Clutter Compass, our mission is to guide individuals with compassion, integrity, and professionalism as they reclaim their space and peace of mind. We are committed to upholding the highest ethical standards, respecting confidentiality, and creating safe, inclusive environments. Through expert training, support, and collaboration, we empower both clients and organisers to navigate the decluttering journey with clarity, confidence, and care.
Our story began with two distinct yet parallel paths, both leading to the same heartfelt mission: to help people find peace and freedom in their homes. We are Marie Bateson founder of Cut the Clutter and Rachel Riches founder of The Declutter Lady , and together, we created this business to combine our passion for organising with a deep sense of compassion for others.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve found joy in creating order. As a child, I'd often rearrange my bedroom and sort through drawers, and to this day, I love the fresh start a house move provides. My early years in the corporate world honed my skills in time management, coordination, and process optimisation, all of which I now use to help our clients.
In 2017, after helping friends and family declutter their homes and clear out my mum's flat, I realised this was more than just a hobby—it was my calling. I discovered my niche in helping busy individuals who lack the time, motivation, or vision to tackle their own clutter. This led me to found Cut the Clutter. I am also a proud board member of APDO (the Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers).
My journey into professional organising began after a pivotal life change. For over 15 years, I was a Director of Sales in the demanding hospitality industry. My life took a dramatic turn in 2015 when I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. While I worked through chemotherapy and a mastectomy, my employer let me go, a crushing blow that forced me to re-evaluate my life.
The true spark ignited years earlier when I helped my parents downsize. What could have been an overwhelming task became a labour of love as I navigated their decades of belongings. I discovered the profound difference it makes when someone walks alongside you with patience, empathy, and a plan.
A turning point came during COVID when a difficult encounter with a member of the public made me realise I wanted to do work that truly mattered. I found that work in professional organising. I trained with APDO, started my own business, and for over three years, I’ve been helping clients bravely face their clutter, memories, and sometimes their grief. Today, my dad’s dementia continues to progress, and the flexibility of this work allows me to be there for him while also supporting my clients. This balance is priceless.
